June is a transition month. Most of the game fish have spawned and now some return to the deeper water and some stay shallow depending on vegetation for cover. Vegetation provides shade, O₂ added to the water, and a place for the bait fish to hide and provides an ambush point for the bass.
With that being said, shallow fish love top water baits early from a buzz bait, Yellow Magic or frog-type bait. Then after the sun gets up good, a wacky worm or Senko-type bait with a very light weight will work along the vegetation.
For the offshore bass, main lake points and creek channels will be a good place to find them when you see shad on your electronics. Carolina rig, drop shot, or jig will work to catch these bass. My favorite color jig this time of the year is a black, brown, amber-colored skirt. Love to fish along and around the bigger stumps along creeks.
As for the crappie, they are moving into the creeks and brush piles in 18–22 ft of water. Jigs, both hand-tied and plastic, along with minnows will always catch a bunch of crappie. If fishing a jig, try to match the color you use with a shad or minnow color.
